GALILEE THANKS THE LAW SOCIETY

Galilee would like to express how appreciative we are to the Law Society for their kindness, support and very generous donation of $13,000. The money that was raised for Galilee as part of the 2010 Law Week will be used to support some of Canberra’s most disadvantaged babies, children and young people.

Galilee will equally share the raised funds between the Galilee School program and the Galilee Foster Care Program.

The Galilee School provides an alternative education program for disadvantaged and at-risk young people aged between 12 and 16 years in the Canberra region.   The Galilee School is an accredited secondary school covering years 7 to 10, which may culminate with the issuance of a Year 10 Certificate. Students attend the school during normal school hours five days a week where they focus on numeracy and literacy skills in an environment that is supportive and conducive to learning.

The financial donation that Galilee received from Law Week means that the young people attending the Galilee School will continue to engage in the FitKids program, the Fireball Emotional Literacy Project, and the Drop Everything and Read Project, just to name a few. Often, the Galilee School is the very last resort for these young people, and your donation means that we can continue to provide them a high level of quality educational curriculum activities.

The Galilee Foster Care Program facilitates the placement of babies, children and young people with foster care families in the Canberra region. Children are referred to Galilee by the ACT Office for Children, Youth and Family Support (OCYFS) because their families temporarily or permanently are not able to care for them. Children may be in foster care for a few days, a few months, or long term. Wherever possible, GFC aims to restore children to the care of their families, however some children remain in care until they reach independence. Many of these children have come from difficult circumstances, especially leading up to being placed in foster care. They may have experienced multiple separations from their natural family, abuse, neglect, ongoing emotional crises and instability, etc.

Finding special people to become foster carers to these children is no easy task. With the assistance of the funds raised in Law Week, the Galilee Foster Care Program will be able to continue the intensive support that it provides to some of Canberra’s most disadvantaged babies, children and young people. Once again, Galilee wishes to thank the Law Society for their generosity, and we look forward to a continued relationship into the future.
