GALILEE THANKS THE ST GEORGE FOUNDATION

Galilee would like to express how appreciative we are to receive the first installment of the St. George Foundation Grant of $6,000 (totaling $18,000 over 3 years) to support the Galilee School Breakfast and Lunch Program.

A sponsorship period of three years offers a level of certainty to the Galilee School community, especially for the students who require a stable and predictable environment.

The Galilee School provides an alternative education program for disadvantaged and at-risk young people aged between 12 and 16 years in the Canberra region.   The Galilee School is an accredited secondary school covering years 7 to 10, which may culminate with the issuance of a Year 10 Certificate. Students attend the school during normal school hours five days a week where they focus on numeracy and literacy skills in an environment that is supportive and conducive to learning.

The young people who attend the Galilee School often arrive without having eaten breakfast and many do not bring lunch or make healthy food choices. This program not only offers the students a healthy meal to begin their day, it is also integrated into the literacy and numeracy curriculum resulting in longer term outcomes. The program has greatly assisted with the engagement and participation of the students in classes, thus significantly enhancing their learning experience.

When students eat a healthy breakfast and lunch their appetites are progressively stimulated, which in turn promotes normal eating patterns that promote more stable blood sugar levels. Consequently, students are less lethargic, they concentrate and focus better and lessons become more productive.

Further to this, the program has seen students gain an understanding of the benefits of good nutrition on their behaviour and learning abilities, plus it has instilled a broader understanding of the importance of general health and wellbeing.

Once again, Galilee wishes to thank the St. George Foundation for their generous support of the next 3 years.   Due to your invaluable funding provision, Galilee can continue supporting some of Canberra’s most disadvantaged young people in their educational endevours.
